ITS Coffee Break – 4/9/07 – Password Changes, EduSpaces, DRM-less iTunes Songs, Webmail Rules

Published by Kenneth Newquist under Podcasts, Technology

The big news that network passwords will no longer expire leads off the ITS Coffee Break this week. Hosts Ken Newquist and Courtney Bentley discuss what this means for faculty, staff and students at Lafayette … and what you can do to make your password more secure. In other ITS news, the online survey application WebSurveyor has changed its name to Vovici. The service has a whole new look, but the surveys hosted through it remain the same. In Tech News, they discuss the launch of EduSpaces, a higher education social networking site and the announcement that EMI and Apple have penned a deal to sell DRM-less music in the iTunes Music Store. Finally in Help News, Courtney offers a quick walkthrough of how to setup rules within Webmail to better manage your e-mail.

Searching for Web 2.1

Later this month I’m going to be giving a brown bag presentation on Web 2.0, updating everyone on the latest web sites and apps that have been released since my last talk on the topic. I’m looking for suggestions and recommendations about sites to discuss about this year.

Last time around, I talked about:

This time I’m looking at Twitter, the newly-unified Google Docs & Sheets and a bunch of other stuff whose names escape me right now. Got a site you like? Post a comment or e-mail me at newquisk@lafayette.edu.

Badboy: Easy-to-use front end for JMeter

My quest for load-testing tools for Banner Self-Service has led me to Badboy, an tool that allows you to record your actions as you browse a web site, and then save those actions — along with variables and programming logic — to a test plan you can then run in the open source load-tester Jmeter.

You can also run the tests directly within Badboy, but I found this didn’t work so well with Banner Self-Service; I’m not sure why — it worked fine with Moodle. The exported Jmeter test plans also worked fine in my initial tests; I’m now working on setting up a more complicated test with a hundred or so users.

I came across the mention of Badboy on the Luminis Developers Network, which includes posts dealing with the Luminis portal, Banner Self Service and Internet Native Banner.
